Bookpage review: CONSPIRACY AT THE TOP Lynn Green , Editor on April 27, 2016
Deep in the arcane annals of political doings is the Electoral College, the much-misunderstood institution that casts the actual ballots to elect a U.S. president. (Nope, the president is not elected by direct popular vote, as you may have thought.) Political operative and Washington insider Roy Neel takes this seemingly dry topic and spins a scary warning shot in The Electors, his new thriller about a conspiracy to subvert the results of a presidential election. For those of you who think presidential campaigns are predictable, and unlikely to have outlandish outcomes, we submit this year's presidential race as evidence to the contrary.
Having served as White House chief of staff to Vice President Al Gore, Neel has the background and credentials to give his first work of fiction a gritty and realistic tone. He has also been a close observer of the outsized personalities who dominate politics, and who are mirrored in the book's ruthless, arrogant, promiscuous and often funny characters.
Fans of sharp-edged political fiction, take note: Neel, who recently answered questions about The Electors for BookPage, will appear tomorrow at Nashville's Parnassus Books for a reading and discussion.
